You’ll struggle to find a restaurant that serves Dutch dishes outside Holland. That has a reason. To be honest, you will struggle to find a restaurant IN Holland that serves real Dutch dishes. In the 21st century many people in the Netherlands are not eating a typical Dutch meal even once a month. Is it that bad? No, in fact it can be really good but it usually requires (peeling those potatoes) a lot of work to prepare and it can be quite heavy as it is usually full of carbs.
Having said that, we encourage you to try at least a few local dishes. In winter you can try a ‘stamppot’ which is basically mashed potatoes with a vegetable such as cabage or carrot. Or try pea soup with bacon and sauscage in it. In spring you can have white asperges served with egg, ham and butter. If you are really brave you can try ‘rauwe haring’ or raw herring. Yep that’s uncooked fish (with onions) and most dutch people love it. There is a lot more to try from seafood to real dutch junk food (frikandellen, anyone?), hachee (or zuurvlees) and many different pastries.
And of course let’s not forget Dutch cheese . After reclaiming all that land in the west, dutch people found out that nothing would grow on the saline soil except grass. So we switched from agriculture to livestock, resulting in an abundance of dairies products. Our cheese is world famous, and for a reason. Visit the cheese markets in places like Alkmaar or Gouda and have taste of this delicous product.
